The National Literacy Trust in Peterborough inspires families across the city to read together and helps parents to support their children’s literacy. They also work with schools and early years professionals to improve reading and writing skills.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- children who are the most engaged with literacy are shown to be more likely to have higher levels of mental wellbeing
- children who have a book of their own at home have higher levels of mental wellbeing on average than their peers who have no books of their own

What to expect

They work with a focus on getting early years children ready to start school. They also create and share fun activities to encourage reading for pleasure and parental engagement.
They have a range of resources for families, such as
- live storytelling videos
- activities to improve language, literacy and communication skills at home
- downloads such as story trails, reading challenges, and football training cards
They also have a suite or resources for schools, including training.
There are also Community Bookshelves across the city, or you can become a volunteer Literacy Champion and help encourage and inspire children to read!
