This group provides year-round swimming training and competition for children 8+ and adults with intellectual disabilities. The group gives opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it gives the swimmers a chance to be part of a team, to feel a sense of pride and achievement, to enjoy the success of winning, to learn to support each other in times of disappointment, and have aspirations to improve, develop and succeed.
- it helps them to be fit and healthy.
- it helps them foster friendships and develop social skills.
- it is a support network for the parents and siblings sharing information and problem solving the many issues they have to face.

This is a club for people with a learning disability as per the SOGB criteria.
Peterborough Special Olympic Swimming Group offer 1 hour sessions with a Level 2 lead coach and volunteer Level 1 coaches at the Jack Hunt Pool for technique and stroke development.
Many of their swimmers compete at Special Olympic galas representing the club. They have some swimmers who also have swum for Eastern Region at the GB National Special Olympic Summer Games. They even have one swimmer who swims at international level for DSS GB.
They have the whole pool for the club at their sessions. Swimmers are divided into lanes by swim level ability. Swimmers have to be able to swim 25m unaided without touching the sides or lane ropes and be able to follow instructions as staff are unable to provide 1:1 support.
For potential swimmers they offer three free sessions before signing up to the club, and then paying the monthly fee and annual insurance.
